Shame about my look on that evening, back from the gym, NOT a good look!

On my way to Charing Cross Rail Station, I walk past this odd looking man with his family. I didn't recognize him straight away but I thought I knew him from somewhere. Next thing I know, I started walking the other way and saw him stop. My hands started shaking, I couldn't believe it! My heart started to beat faster and faster. Oh-My-God! This is Gary Numan! GARY F**KING NUMAN!
I don't remember much, I was absolutely starstruck! I've asked if I could take a picture and he gently said yes. Bingo!
His wife was lovely, she asked if she could take the picture and actually took a few of them. Even their kids wanted to be on the picture so we posed all together (but I'm keeping this one for myself). We shared a joke and went our separate ways.
I was so excited, I couldn't stop talking about it for weeks. But I wish I had a proper chat with him. Ahhhh! Nevermind!
Next music hero I would like to meet would be: John Foxx, Siouxsie Sioux, Alan Wilder, Peter Hook....

MUTEMATH - Odd Soul / Review

American Rock band Mutemath is just like wine, the older it is, the better it gets. Their 3rd studio album Odd Soul is starting with a bang with their Audioslavesque first track also named "Odd Soul". Then come the 70s inspired tunes such as "Prytania", "Tell Your Heart Heads Up" and "One More".
Their first single "Blood Pressure" is also widely 70s inspired with its psychedelic guitar riffs and memorable solo. A great first taste of this fabulous album! Also combining soul with tracks such as "Allies" and "Walking Paranoia", Odd Soul is a great album from beginning to end which could be a killer in a live version. Mutemath is definitely an act to watch!

2011 hasn't been musically exciting apart for bands like Digitalism and Egyptian Hip Hop but Gravity The Seducer has proved me wrong. Starting the album with "White Elephant" and "Mirage", two strong songs in the like of Vangelis, Ladytron clearly shows maturity and sophistication. Their "Recoil-esque" song "White Gold" is a gem and their first single "Ace of Hz" has huge commercial potential. But the real star of this album is "90 Degrees" - it is rich, well-produced and catchy. Just close your eyes...

Heaven 17's first album Penthouse and Pavement released in 1980 was a landmark in UK pop history combining electronica with pop hooks. Due to technological constraints the band were unable to perform the album live at the time of its release. However, to celebrate its 30th anniversary and with the advances in technology, the album was performed for the first time to a sell-out gig of over 2000 people at the Sheffield Magna Arena on 6 March 2010. Along with their hits Temptation, Let Me Go and Come Live With Me they perform Penthouse and Pavement in its entirety.

Big time Kent fan. Since I don't live in Sweden anymore, it's a bit hard to keep up with them.
Their last single released is "Idioter" which basically means "Idiots". It is extract from their last album Röd is available on CDON (click HERE).

The first single released from this album was "Töntarna".

The more music they release, the more electronic they sound. I have to say, they're far from being fame whores like bloody Meatloaf - his last album was a desperate call for fame, but it's only my humble opinion, don't hate me for that!!!
They have aged gracefully and they sound great. They have perfectly embraced the technology that is now available and did a pretty good job with it!

Sting, my hero!
I've always loved The Police from an early age. My dad would often play their albums in our car. And I've always like Sting.
Now that I'm learning to play Bass Guitar, this is one song that I've learned quite quickly. It's easy, simple and catchy!
The video is also really cool, you've got the late US 70s look and it was shot at the Kennedy Space Center! I love all that Nasa stuff. Enjoy!

If there was one French singer that I had to pick for this blog, it can only be Calogéro.
I don't really French music but this guy's pretty good.
"Safe Sex" isn't as explicit as its title. It just tells the story of two bodies travelling together.
My friend MOG is a complete Calogéro fan! She's seen him at least 10 times and if she ever manages to touch his hand or meet him, she might faint! Aaaaaaaaah! She's so cute!

Depeche Mode - Stripped & Never Let Me Down Again (101 Live) > The Videos!!!

I have discovered Depeche Mode when I was a teenager. My sister and I were watching a German music TV channel called Viva Zwei and they were playing the "Everybody Counts" live video from 101. I remember saying to my sister: "Hey! I really like that song!" and she replied "why don't you go get their album called 101?". I instantly wrote that number on my agenda. A couple of days later, my dad took me to a record shop and bought me the 101 double CD album. I was in heaven!!! I couldn't wait to get back home and listen to it. I didn't wanted to hear it in the car just in case... It could have spoiled it!!!
Once at home, rushed to my bedroom, never came back out! I was in DM heaven. Never heard anything like it in my life. It was powerful and still very complex for a live album. It was as if they were playing for me. I had found my thing and it was called Depeche Mode.
I asked around at school if anyone had heard about that band and no one did. They were way too much into girls bands and boys bands!
Still researching about that new sound, I went back to that record shop where I've found the 101 album and there it was, on the video section, 101 by D.A. Pennebacker.
At home, rushed to my parents bedroom to watch the VHS on my own, never left the room (up until they wanted to go to sleep).
I was more and more sucked into the music and having the images that goes with it, I just couldn't move away from the screen.
When they played Never Let Me Down Again, it was such a shock that I cried!
Call me Emo, call me Geek, call me whatever the hell you want, I couldn't care less.
Depeche Mode had just became my thing.

I just hope that you'll like it too.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah! What a great track!
The video is a bit naughty but hey! they needed exposure and they got it!
Although TV channels refused to play it, clubs were the only places which accepted it with open arms.
Nevermind the video, the single is an instant hit in 1981!

As a true Depeche Mode fan, I worship Martin Gore and all his songs. When I discovered the Tribute To The Masses album, I was stunned! Not only their songs still sounded good through different bands but also the artists who did this were also true fans and it shows!

I do have two songs from this Tribute album that I really love:

1- Rammstein - Stripped
2- The Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again

Speaking of the SP, they're back in studio.

Grace Jones, "feeling like a woman, looking like a man". "Walking In The Rain" is to me the song that defines Grace Jones. The music sounds like it could have been Serge Gainsbourg's.

One of the best Brit Pop acts is back, FINALLY!
With the Gorillaz project sucking all Damon Albarn's time, we weren't very optimistic about a Blur reunion but it happened!!!

According to the Daily Mail (for the whole article CLICK HERE) they will distribute copies of their new single in selected privately owned record shop.
I think it's a great thing because private records shop are a dying breed.

Ellie Goulding - The Brit's Revelation of the Year - Starry Eyed >> The Video!!!

Meet Ellie Goulding, Revelation of the Year at The Brits, climbing up the British charts with her track "Starry Eyed".

I don't particularly like the video but the sound of this track is just brilliant. The rhythm is energetic, the sound effects are amazing, it really gives you this gentle kick that you need in the morning.

Her album Lights is pretty good but unfortunately, and that is my own opinion, all these songs sound a bit the same and there's not much musical differences that makes this album stands out. But "Starry Eyed" is definitely her strongest track!

Way Out West - We Love Machine

I was at home when my boyfriend started to play some of his music.
This sounded really good so I asked him "Hey! What is this?", "It's Way Out West" he replied.

This track is called "We Love Machine" from their 2009 album of the same name.

This is such a real "feel good" song. Perfect for the wonderful shiny days that are now here.

When P and I met up in Sthlm for a "Donken fika" on a cold winter day, I told him about Hot Chip. "P., listen to this band. I wanna sound like them!" He never heard of them. He then listened to their album The Warning and this was his feedback: "Boy from School" and "Over and Over" are brilliant! The rest... so so!"

I love the whole album! It's catchy, fun and has such a positive vibe in its overall which makes it one of my favourite summer albums. The Warning is a great album for the gym, barbecues, listening while travelling. It is just so light full of laughter that it is impossible to feel depressed once you've finished it.

Valentine's day songs, can't find any really...!

I have been looking for that Valentine's Day romantic kind of songs but wasn't really inspired.
What really inspired me was the Smashing Pumpkins's "Ava Adore". But with the intro "It's you that I adore, You'll always be my whore", I thought that my boyfriend might not like it. Even though the song is brilliant: the guitar is loud, the lyrics are good. You really feel something. It's just that intro that might turn him off (and probably Billy Corgan's voice as well).

Then I thought about "Today", again from the Smashing Pumpkins. Not bad but not my first choice for a cuddle. At least I didn't fall for Daniel Beddingfield's cheesy "If You're Not The One" song that might have been played over and over again at weddings. Or even Robbie William's "Angel" over-played at funerals!

Then I thought, let's go 70s with 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" but what if Boyfriend thinks I don't love him anymore? A little bit further in time was "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" from Korgis. It's nice, relaxing but again, damn cheesy!

Scissor Sisters have a couple of great songs on their first studio album called... ermm... Scissor Sisters. Songs like "It Can't Come Quickly Enough"; "Laura" and "Return to Oz" are musically awesome but the lyrics are far from being romantic. For example, their song "Return to Oz" is about drug abuse within the Gay community.

And just before dark, then came a briliant idea: ZERO7! Why haven't thought about it earlier???? Their whole abum When It Falls is a triumph of love. Perfect for a romantic night in with Boyfriend. Ending the album with Morcheeba's "The Sea" and then Groove Armada's "My Friend", this is going to be a great night!

If there is ONE song I would recommend for that type of "evening", this would be Zero7's "Over Our Heads". This songs is really special!

Right before Christmas break, I had a little argument with a friend saying that Lady GaGa is just a little pop star like many in the style of Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears. I DISAGREE!!! She's more than that!!! She's outrageous! She's different from those other little starlets. There's something else about GaGa. I think she's a real girl, what she says is what she really thinks not something her manager or PR told her to say. She's got her own style, her own rules. I hope she gets better than Madonna!

I have discovered Walter Meego on MySpace (Check out their page HERE!!!) and loved it straight away! First, it was love at first "sight" with their track "Forever". This was the kick I needed for a while! I wanted something new, something with a positive vibe that makes me want to dance or just go to the gym whether for running on the treadmill or stretching and to me, this album can fallow me everywhere (even in the shower if I could).

Walter Meego is an American band but that's all I know about them. They have a Blogspot blog (CLICK HERE!)
Their album Voyager was released in 2008 and has such a "feel-good" effect on me that I can only describe it as THE SOUNDTRACK OF THESE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS 2009!!!
It their first studio album ever and I can't wait to listen to the next one and see them live!
Some tracks sound really electro funk with the voice of a David Bowie on speed. Some others sounds like 90s band Babylon Zoo if they had stopped the drugs and became happy. But to resume it all, one word: BRILLIANT!
I can't even tell you which of these tracks I love the most.

I have a sister who's 10 years older than me and she is/was a U2 fan. She used to have a big poster of the band in her room and one day, pointing towards that poster she asked me "who do you prefer?" and I pointed Larry Mullen Jnr and then she says "bad answer. That one!" pointing her finger towards Bono.
After all these years, I still think that Larry Mullen Jnr is absolutely gorgeous and I stand firm on it. Check out the video above. It's "The Unforgettable Fire" from the album called erhmm... the same. It was released in 1984 while the track was released in April 1985 (when I was born).
The album was produced by Brian Eno (ex-Roxy Music) and Daniel Lanois. Recorded at Slane Castle (Ireland), you can follow the recording, writting and everything in the documentary called... erhmm... again... The Unforgettable Fire.

MASSIVE ATTACK LIVE IN LYON - My concert review

I went to see Massive Attack with my dear friend Uncle Terr. It was brilliant!!!
The opening act was Martina Topley-Bird. She has been working with Tricky, Gorillaz and of course Massive Attack. It was very nice to hear, her melodies are sweet and even a little "childish" but in a very nice and innocent way. Some of her songs sounded like it could have been a lullaby.

Then came the "rain"! The guys came on stage and blew us away starting straight away with their brand new single called "Splitting the Atom". It was a first for me because I've never heard it before and it was mesmerising! But the highlights were of course "Unfinished Symphony", "Inertia Creeps" and "Angel". Unfortunately we had no "Karmakoma" but it didn't altered the show in any way. "Inertia Creeps" being one of my favourite song, it was a magical experience to actually hear it live in the middle of the crowd twisting like a snake with my hands in the air. I was lost in the melody and guided by Robert Del Naja's voice.

At the end of the show, Martina Topley-Bird was out signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans and we approched her and chat a bit. She was lovely. She didn't like the lightning so she then said "let's lay down on these tables and you (Gilles) will take the picture from above". "Alright! Let's do it!" I replied. Ok, I look like shit compared to her and her natural poise.

One evening, I was at my boyfriend's and we were just looking at what was on TV when suddenly he tuned on BBC Two and I saw this:

The show is the famous Later... With Jools Holland.
I loved that track! It was good, sounded fresh. And like I said to Mr R. "this would be the sound of Zoot Woman if they'd been produced by New Order" and I'm convinced about it! And this is how I "met" Delphic.

Wanting to hear more from them, my boyfriend and I decided to look at what Delphic posted on YouTube. My boyfriend has this Media PC connected to his living room tv so we were able to watch everything we wanted in a large format and we found this video:

We couldn't believe it! We were both staring at the pictures, completely taken away by the music. Nothing could have made us looking at anything else but that screen. We were like hypnotised. It was good! It was really good!
The video of "This Momentary" was shot in Tchernobyl - so my boyfriend says.

I have been able to listen to a couple of their tracks and to me "Doubt" and "Submissive" are by far the best of all.

Ranked at the number 28 in the UK Top 40 at this very minute is Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'". Surprising isn't it? Recently, Joe McElderry, a contestant on UK's X-Factor, sang this song on their live show which probably appealed to every single one "small town girl living in a lonely world". Imagine you're a 13 year old girl, watching TV and see this sensitive gorgeous young man singing this, it might come as a revelation: "Oh My God! This is so me!!! I need Itunes NOW!!! Arrrrrhhhh!!!" Pure craziness!
But this isn't bad at all. If I had a child and if he or she wanted to buy this track, I'd be more than happy to buy it. At least I would be sure this is a positive track unlike so many tunes you can find featuring a pathetic guy like Akon saying "Heeeeey hooooo sexy b***h!".

"The Chain" is some kind of anthem for Fleetwood Mac. The song was released on the Rumours album and dates back from 1977. It is one of my all time favourite songs.

I discovered The Sounds while I was living in Sweden. MTV was on quite regularly on one particular summer and they were playing The Sounds a lot! It all started with "Song with a Mission" and their so-called "revolution video" (which I hated) then came out "Tony The Beat" with that poppy/new wave sound that I like so much! It was love at the first notes!

The Sounds is a Swedish band. Their first album, Living in America, was released in 2002 followed by Dying To Say This To You in 2006 which includes "Song with a Mission", "Tony The Beat" and "Night After Night". Brilliant album, highly recommended!!!!

Familjen is a Swedish band from Skane that I discovered while I was in Sweden. My friend P-Tech Santiago game me their album two years ago and I really liked it! I discovered this song on Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks complilation, which I highly recommend!
Erlend is one part of the wonderful Norwegian duo called Kings of Convenience. Him and Eirik Boe, two softly singing voices on two romantic acoustic guitars. It's absolutely beautiful, perfect for meditation, a massage or just a nice bubble bath! But Erlend is more than that, he's also the lead singer of a German Indie band called The Whitest Boy Alive. If you wanna "move your booty" check out Dance Remix of The Whitest Boy Alive's "Golden Cage".

I really like this song. I'm currently at work on my lunch break and here I am, posting about that song I'm listening at this very moment. This song is called "Hell Is Around The Corner" and dates back 1995. It is remix of The Portishead's "Glory Box".
Tricky is an English trip hop artist who also worked with Massive Attack. He is also an actor and worked with John Woo and Luc Besson - Tricky was playing the right-hand man of Mr Zorg (Gary Oldman - you've got to love that movie).

Love this song! The video is really "kitsch"! As you can see on this video, the look of the lead singer, Paul King, is... something! He looks like a child who's went through his parents closet!
The band King was created in the early eighties by Paul King and three other guys we don't really know... Originally from Coventry, England, their sound is pop and reminds me the one of Huey Lewis & The News, Hall & Oates, Glenn Frey... (the list is long, there were many artists alike)

Released in March 2009, Röyksopp's album Junior includes featuring of Swedish artists such as Robyn, The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson and Lykke Li. Also featuring in this album is a regular guest on Röyksopp's album, the wonderful Norwegian Anneli Drekker.
The first single released from this album was "The Girl and The Robot" (see video) but "Happy Up Here" was originally aired on British radio stations before.
Junior is still in the line of their two previous albums Melody A.M. and The Understanding. My favourite still being Melody A.M., I can definitely say that they grew up stronger than before. Even being called Junior, this album sounds more "mature" than any of them. But wait for it! A new album will be out next year and this one will be called... wait for it... wait for it... Senior!!!!

My name is Breena and I'm a Jinxoholic. "Hello Breena!" would say the people sitting all around me making a circle. Once a week, we would meet up somewhere in town and share our fears about not being able to find the right collector vinyl of a rare Depeche Mode pirate live album released only at 12 copies in Singapore in 1984! Or maybe that one and only concert ticket of Cabaret Voltaire from 1983 playing in Helsinki, Finland! Buying junk from Jinx can become more than a sport. It can quickly turn to addiction.

I've discovered Jinx Records when I was 15. I went to an old record shop where I lived at that time of my life and found a pile of old magazines underneath the table where vinyls of psychedelic rock bands were kept in boxes. I would go to that shop, rush to the magazines and not minding the thick dust all around me, look for music magazines such as Rolling Stones, Rock Sound, Best - a French magazine dedicated to the New Wave movement - and NME. There were just a handful of Rolling Stones magazines and only ONE NME - it's France, what do you expect!?! That day, I bought my first four vintage magazines! Amazed of what was in there, I came back to the shop the very next day in the morning. I was really excited about going back there! And I came back home with all the Best magazines I could find in the shop!

Going through the Best magazines, an advert for a record shop appeared in almost every Best magazines. They had vinyl, tapes, videos, books and memorabilia of whatever you want, from pop music to hard rock music! There was a phone number on the adverts so I rang. And to my surprise, the phone number was still working and a man picked up the phone! Unbelievable, it was a sign! So I asked a salesman if he could send me by post a list of all the new wave stuff they had and a week or so later, a thick letter arrived in the mailbox. Inside was a list filled with names of what would later become my idols, the sounds of good and bad times. It was better than a surprise birthday gift. I felt excited, eager to know as much as I could about all those names so I decided to get organised. I took two highlighters - one yellow and one green - and highlighted in yellow the items I wanted and in green the ones I didn't know. The list was a mess! But my very first order was a success. I ordered a promotional book from 1983 about Duran Duran, their second hand live album from 1984 called Arena - Recorded All Around The World and Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1981 Juju. And the best thing about Jinx is that when I received the parcel, they even thought about adding a new list!

I think that everything happens for a reason and coincidences don't exist! It was a sign, I had to know more about music and open my mind to new things, new names, new sounds. I've always loved Jinx Records and I always will. It is my "pêché mignon"!

Melody Club - Palace Station Smala Sussie's Soundtrack > The Video!

Gimme a bit of Glam, a bit of Rock and some Swedish vibe and there you have Melody Club!
This band was formed in the early 00s and is still active to this day - thank God!
I came across their song "Palace Station" when I was watching a Swedish movie called Smala Sussie (which I highly recommend). They only play the first 30 seconds of the track but at the very beginning I knew I would love it! And I loved it! I still love it! So here it is, "Palace Station" released in 2002 from the album Music Machine.

German Propaganda

This is Propaganda, a German band formed in the early eighties who signed with the ZTT label (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Art of Noise, Grace Jones, etc...).
Their first album Secret Wish was released in 1984 and their first single was "Dr Mabuse" followed by "Duel" and "P. Machinery".

In 1986, the band broke up after legal problems with ZTT. Claudia Brücken, the lead singer, tried to pursue a solo career but with no real luck.
In the end of the 80s, the band reformed but with a new lead singer. Bye bye Claudia, hello Betsi! She'll help recording their "all American" second album called 1234 this time signed with Virgin Records. The album includes 90s single "Heaven Gives Me Words" written by Howard Jones (who had a few hits in the 80s like "What Is Love" and "Pearl In The Shell"). Well produced, the album was never a commercial success. The band broke up again just to get reformed with the original line up and guess what!?! They broke up again!

The only piece to remember is still Secret Wish.

Alphaville - This Word Will Always Sounds Like A Melody

In 1999, Alphaville released an eight CD box-set filled with excellent remixes of their best tracks and B-sides. More than 9 hours of really good quality electro. My favourite are still their early 80s tracks and B-sides especially "Seeds" and "Elevator". I really like the Dreamscapes CD #3 with my two most favourite songs fallowed by "Welcome To The Sun" which is an ôde to summer loving. But the CD #1 is, to me, the most fascinating of all eight CDs. This album is a collection of all their first Demos with some extras perfectly remastered.

The Bravery - An Honest Mistake

I have discovered The Bravery in 2005 during Depeche Mode's Touring The Angels World Tour. They stopped by Stockholm to play in Globen and The Bravery were their supporting act. Really good performance, I was really amazed of what I've just heard.

This band is from New York. They have been the opening act for Duran Duran, Razorlight and of course Depeche Mode. My favourite album is simply entitled The Bravery (2005) and they have released two more albums : The Sun And The Moon (2007) and Stir The Blood (2009).
